About the area
Marchmont / Meadows / Sciennes
Marchmont / Sciennes is an area just South of the popular green space called 'The Meadows'. It's largely a residential area for homeowners and students tenants, but a great place to stay during August for festival participants - close to Bristo Square, Old Town and many of the Southside venues. Large traditional sandstone tenement buildings with spacious apartments line the streets up from The Meadows to the northern boundary of Grange Road. There are plenty of local supermarkets (Sainsbury and Scotmid) and good lunch / restaurants such as 'The Birchwood' on Marchmont Road and "Red Box" on Spottiswoode Street. For finer dining, you might try "The Rabbit Hole" and neighbourhood pub,'The Earl of Marchmont', is well worth a visit. For those interested in cooking, fishmongers 'Eddies Seafood' is the place to go for all your fresh fish. If you're travelling up by car, carparking is metered / paid for (unless you are a resident) but 'free parking' is close, only 10-20 min walk south (so not too bad!).
