About the area

Marchmont / Meadows / Sciennes

Marchmont is an area just South of the greenspace called 'The Meadows' (which leads into Edinburgh's Old Town). It's a very popular residential area for homeowners, students and festival participants alike, with large traditional sandstone tenement buildings and spacious flats on the streets leading up from The Meadows to the northern boundary of Grange Road. There are good local supermarkets such as Sainsbury and Scotmid and the newly opened 'Cobbs' on Marchmont Road / Spottiswoode Street makes a welcome addition to the coffee bar / lunch scene. Another new place, noodle bar 'Saiko' has also opened on Warrender Park Road (which I haven't yet tried but looks good!). For those interested in cooking, fishmongers 'Eddies Seafood' is the place to go for all your fresh fish. If you're travelling up by car, carparking is metered / paid for (unless you are a resident) with the closest 'free parking' is a 10-20 min walk south (so not too bad!).
